Magic
Magic: The Gathering (MTG) is the world’s first and most influential trading card game, created by Richard Garfield and first published by Wizards of the Coast in 1993. It blends collectible card gameplay with deep strategy, offering a rich fantasy setting and a constantly evolving metagame.
Core Gameplay
In MTG, players take on the role of Planeswalkers — powerful wizards from different planes in the Multiverse. Each player builds a deck of cards, using mana (generated from land cards) to cast spells. Cards fall into types such as Creatures, Sorceries, Instants, Artifacts, Enchantments, and Planeswalkers, each with unique abilities. The goal is to reduce your opponent’s life total to zero, often through combat, but other win conditions also exist.
Formats & Play
MTG supports both tabletop and digital play:
-
Constructed formats: Players build decks from their own cards (minimum 60 cards).
-
Limited formats: Players assemble decks from a shared pool of random cards (minimum 40 cards).
It can be played casually with friends, competitively in tournaments, or online via platforms like Magic: The Gathering Arena. Magic: The Gathering | Official site for MTG news, sets, and events
Lore & Setting
The game’s Multiverse features dozens of distinct planes, each with its own history, characters, and storylines. Players explore this lore through cards, novels, comics, and digital content. Iconic figures like Jace Beleren and Gideon Jura are central to the narrative.
Community & Popularity
MTG has over 50 million players worldwide and a vibrant community through the Wizards Play Network and events like MagicCon. It has inspired countless other trading card games and remains a leader in the genre, with new expansions regularly introducing new mechanics and strategies
